Since Ferrari 812
Superfast was first revealed, it has been considered as Ferrari’s most
powerful regular production car to date. And true, this car’s performance is
spectacular, to a point that people wonder whether this is a super-GT or a
supercar. Interesting enough, Aston Martin also revealed their new super-GT
flagship – Aston Martin DBS Superleggera
– which is the answer to Ferrari 812 Superfast. This “brute in a suit” has also proven itself to be the most exceptional
car Aston Martin has ever built. And today, let’s pitch these 2 super-GTs Ferrari 812 Superfast vs Aston Martin DBS
Superleggera into battle and see which one emerges victorious!

Ferrari 812 Superfast is the replacement for the F12berlinetta back in 2012. This new front-engined, rear-wheel-drive, two-seater features lots of enhancements over the old F12berlinetta, especially the 6.5-litre naturally aspirated V-12 engine and the new chassis technology.
So why it has the name “812
Superfast”? Well, the number “8”
actually refers to 800 “cavalli vapore”
(which means “horsepower” in Italy).
And since horsepower metric in Italy is a bit smaller than the United States’,
the 800 cavalli vapore figure equals to 789 horsepower in US standard. On the
other hand, the number “12” refers to
the car’s 12 cylinders. And finally the term “Superfast” literally means… superfast, it is just how insane this
car’s power really is.
Ferrari 812 Superfast is now available with the base price of
$340,800. In addition, there are also more than 25 customization options for
customers to choose from. Depending on customer’s choices, the price can even
increase to over $450,000.

The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera was revealed last year as Aston Martin’s super-GT flagship and also, a replacement to the Vanquish. It is also dedication to the “DBS” namesake, which reminds us of George Lazenby’s James Bond in 1969 On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, and Daniel Craig’s 007 in 2006 Casino Royale.
The word “Superleggera”
refers to its “lightweight” aspect.
Also, the car actually based on the DB11, featuring the same 5.2-litre
twin-turbo V-12 engine while at the same time, keeping its weight 70kg lighter
than the V-12 DB11. And due the DBS Superleggera being a Vanquish’s replacement
and also, bearer of the DBS’s namesake, clearly there are quite lots of
expectations put on this car.
But as Aston Martin’s boss – Andy Palmer – described, this
super-GT is indeed a “brute in a suit”.
This is one incredible Aston Martin full of potential. And now, let’s see how
the Ferrari 812 Superfast vs Aston Martin DBS Superleggera.
In terms of exterior design, both Ferrari 812 Superfast and
Aston Martin DBS Superleggera share quite similar body type. Both of them are front-engined
GT (except the DBS Superleggera has a 4-seated configuration, yet the 2 back
seats are rather… ineffective).
The two super-GTs also have aggressive, sporty styling. That said, each of them follows a different styling direction. The 812 Superfast looks more ferocious, especially thanks to the sharp lines and hard lines which makes the car feels like a state-of-the-art sculpture. On the other hand, the DBS Superleggera looks “Aston Martin”, it looks muscular while at the same time, exudes the sensation of an elegant gentleman.
Both cars look extremely “handsome”
and attractive. It is literally impossible to say which car has better style.
If you prefer a more energetic, aggressive supercar-like style, Ferrari 812
Superfast is definitely the winner here. But for those who like to enjoy the
elegant, “brutish” gentleman, Aston
Martin DBS Superleggera is a no-brainer.
When it comes to the interior, we can start to see a huge difference in terms of direction here. Starting with Ferrari 812 Superfast, from our perspective the car seems to focus more on driver. This is proven by the fact that there is no standard infotainment screen. Most of the control is put right before the driver seat, right on the steering wheel. From driver-centric standpoint, this design is fantastic since driver can focus on their driving easier. Every control lies within their grasp without needing to reach their hand far away from the steering wheel.
In case of Aston Martin DBS Superleggera, they seem trying to
blend between driver-centric and classy element. It does have a classic feel to
it, yet also; it implements a number of advanced technologies nowadays like the
Mercedes-AMG’s infotainment system. And then there is one aspect which is arguably
offered better than the 812 Superfast: the interior customizations. Compared to
the 812 Superfast, the DBS Superleggera has much more extensive interior
customization ranging from materials to optional features.
By saying that, this does not mean that the 812 Superfast is
completely subpar to the DBS Superleggera. But in terms of personal customization
and luxury sensation, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has the upper hand here.
Power & Performance
In terms of power, we cannot deny that these two cars are
really phenomenal in their own rights. Both cars are powered by their
respective V-12 and both of them can hit the top speed of over 200mph, which is
really crazy. That said, in terms of pure power, clearly Ferrari 812 Superfast
is the crazier beast here.
Despite both have the same 211mph of max speed (on paper); the 812 Superfast accelerates faster than the DBS Superleggera. In particular, the 812 Superfast can hit 60mph from zero only within 2.8sec, while in case of the DBS Superleggera, it takes 3.2sec. From 0 to 100mph, the 812 Superfast is even quicker with 5.8sec record, while the DBS Superleggera needs 7.3sec. In terms of rev, the 812 Superfast also has crazier range of 8900rpm (although the record showed that it is actually capable of 9000rpm redline).
That being said, let’s make it clear that both cars can deliver incredible driving experiences, no doubt about that. When we hit the engine and let it does the job, we can feel how fast these cars are. The sounds are loud and fantastic; the senses of speed are simply phenomenal. However, if we have to pick out a winner here, we have to choose Ferrari 812 Superfast. This Ferrari literally does what its name implies: “superfast.” But that is power, how about their ride and handling then?
Well, again both cars do really good job in this regard. Both cars feel really good with their handling and steering. But, there is another difference in direction here: With Ferrari 812 Superfast, its handling and responsiveness are extremely quick. To certain extent, the car feels so sharp, perhaps too sharp that it may catch us off guard, especially during the first few drives. At the same time, driving the 812 Superfast feels exceptionally good when we get a hang of it. The best way to experience this car’s power and handling is definitely when we’re on track. It is when the 812 Superfast can unleash its full potential.
On the other hand, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera’s handling
also feels really good. And this is the highlight: this car is really
approachable. It feels like we can just simply get in the car, hit that engine
button and have fun with it right away. The DBS Superleggera always gets the right
balance between high power and elegance. It’s truly like what Aston Martin described:
“a brute in a suit.” The car is
really enjoyable on both road and track. But still if we compare the overall
performance, the 812 Superfast is the real kicker. However, its sharp
responsiveness and handling sometimes force driver to focus constantly and
therefore, it can be tiring while driving on road and especially for
grand-touring purpose. On the contrary, the DBS Superleggera’s approachable and
enjoyable experience proves to have better practicality on this regard.
In conclusion, both Ferrari 812 Superfast and Aston Martin
DBS Superleggera are incredible super-GTs which are definitely worth their $300,000
price-tag. The only remaining question is: which one we personally prefer the
most. In terms of overall power and performance, Ferrari 812 Superfast still
excels in every aspect. Yet, Aston Martin DBS Superleggera has the “high ground” thanks to its
approachability and extensive personal customizations.
And that’s it folks! Which
car do you prefer the most: Ferrari 812 Superfast vs Aston Martin DBS
Superleggera? Feel free to share with us and for now, thank you and stay tune
