The Ferrari 488 Pista
was first revealed at Geneva Motor Show
2018 as the fourth addition to Ferrari’s line of limited-edition,
track-focused versions of mid-engine V-8 two-seaters. The word “Pista” is Italian for “track” and as we may have guessed, this
488 Pista has a tremendous capability.
Since the 488 Pista is a more enhanced version of the old 488 GTB, there are quite a number of new things. It still keeps the 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 engine; however, 50% of the engine’s parts are new and thus, the power got bumped 50 more horsepower (from 660hp to 710hp). Of course, gaining 50 more horsepower is not the only thing Ferrari 488 Pista features. The car also includes modification for engine cooling, along with major changes for the bodywork, total weight, aerodynamics, and more…
Those are definitely lots of modifications for the Ferrari
488 Pista. But the most important question still remains: How does it feel in
reality? And with no further ado, let’s take a more detail look at this
As mentioned, Ferrari has made a variety of changes for the
488 Pista. In terms of overall weight, Ferrari 488 Pista is approx. 200lbs (or
90kg) lighter than the 488 GTB. This is partly thanks to the bodywork and
chassis rework, featuring an extensive use of carbon-fibre as replacement for
aluminum. For exterior changes, Ferrari made a variety of modifications,
including some really high attentions to details. For example:
Right on the bonnet we can see the S-Duct system featuring a hole which we can look right through it. Its purpose is to lead the air upward, which puts more push down on the front-end for better downforce. Then looking upfront we can also see a much larger air-intakes which is purposely designed to get as much air as possible.
Looking at the sides we can see a major change to the side
vents. In case of 488 GTB, its side vent is divided by a splitter, the lower
part is for intercooling and the upper part is for engine cooling. But when it
comes to the 488 Pista, the side vent is now a single piece while the
engine-cooler part is moved to the rear, which ultimately provides much better
cooling. Not only that, looking closer at the side vents we can also see some
small parts which plays an important role in reducing the turbulence air. And
while we are looking at the sides, let’s pay attention to the rear-wheel section.
Here we can see the rear skirts where in fact there are curve surfaces which
lead the air-flow away from the wheels.
Moving on to the rear section, one thing 488 GTB owners can
notice is the rear wing which is situated taller and further to the back. Besides
this rear wing, we can see two vents which lead the air through to the engine
for cooling. Then looking below, there are two holes located right behind the
rear wheels where the air can flow out. Talking about wheels, Ferrari 488 Pista
also comes with the optional carbon-fibre wheels, which look absolutely
beautiful, at the price range of $10,000 to $15,000.
Frankly speaking, Ferrari 488 Pista’s interior can leave lots
of things to be desired, depending on different personal preferences. In
general, its interior looks rather old; or outdated even. Still, it is
functional and after all, this is a driving-focused car.
On the bright side, the interior is quite spacious and the view is great. We also have a good view behind the back, including that glorious twin-turbo V-8 engine. The bucket seat is adequately low; however, it is rather uncomfortable especially on a long-distance run.
As a driver-centric car, most buttons and controls are mapped
right on the steering wheel like the engine start button, headlights,
driving-mode switcher, and more… Also, the infotainment screen is nowhere to be
found; instead there is only center rev-cluster with two small digital screens
right beside it.
In the end, this is a pretty standard Ferrari’s
driving-centric interior design and it should not be a deal-breaker for a supercar
of this caliber. But surely, certain people would want to see Ferrari stepping
up their game in terms of next-generation interior design.

As mentioned, at the heart of the Ferrari 488 Pista is the “good old” 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V-8 engine with 50 more horsepower than the previous 488 GTB, making up a total of 710hp and 568lb-ft of torque. That said; boosting 50 more horsepower is not a simple matter. In fact, aside from this huge power bump, Ferrari has also made a variety of upgrades for the engine like new intake system, reinforced cylinder heads and pistons, and lighter titanium rods. Thus, the most important change is the cooling system which modified the car’s look drastically. For instance, as mentioned the side vent now only features the intercoolers, while the air intakes for engine cooling are now moved to the rear near the rear wing.
So how powerful the 488 Pista is exactly? On paper, this
supercar can accelerate from zero to 60mph in less than 3sec (2.8sec to be
precise), and from zero to 100mph only within 5.4sec. It can hit the top speed
of 211mph, and to put into perspective, this car finished the Fiorano track within the lap time of 1:21.5
sec, which is only 2 seconds slower than the Ferrari LaFerrari hypercar.
In reality, the Ferrari 488 Pista is truly that amazing. The car feels insanely fast. The number on speed-o-meter increases so quickly that the speed can easily catch us off guard. Then we have the soundtrack which feels rawer, more exciting than the 488 GTB. And while this may make the 488 Pista sound like a car which requires lots of skill to drive, it is rather approachable and surprisingly balance. The 488 Pista is extremely responsive, and it has excellent steering as well as exceptional level of balance and damping. In addition, the brakes themselves are excellent in their own right. They are incredibly powerful and also, feel extremely solid.
The Ferrari 488 Pista is insanely fast, yes, but it is also
car which let you know it rather quickly. You always have a sense of control no
matter how wild you go along with it. Such incredible experience is possible
partly thanks to the enhanced system called as Ferrari Dynamic Enhancer (FDE)
which serves as a stability-control system. And instead of preventing chassis from
breaking away, this system utilizes the carbon-ceramic brakes to cover the loss
of grip during corners. Indeed it gives the driver much more confident to enjoy
the full extent of this ferocious Ferrari while rest assured at the same time.
On road, driving the 488 Pista is definitely viable; however,
its capability is rather limited. Nonetheless, the Ferrari 488 Pista is not car
deserves to be a mere decoration. It is also not a car just to be drove on
road. Rather, it is car needs to run freely on track and that’s when it can
truly go wild.
Under the base price of $256,550, Ferrari 488 Pista is totally incredible and it is arguably one of
the best supercars of its class. It is insanely powerful yet at the same time,
it gives driver good confident to run wild with it. It is totally comparable to
the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and
